Who's talking about people coming out of the closet, I'm talking about the sudden surge of gay characters/talk show hosts in American media.

It is hard to assess that because the "surge" was supported by two comic book covers so I can't really say I call it a surge.

But someone may have wanted to include gay characters before and felt that they couldn't be included. Some might include them because some people might regard gay people as inherently funny/cool/witty/horrible/disgusting so they will tune in (like an advertisement showing cleavage). I don't know if that would make it hip as much as a gimmick.
